AN up and coming farmer says instead of waiting for government support, he has responded to the Vuk’uzenzele (do for yourself) call by farming chickens in his backyard and selling them to the community as a business.
Zwelithini Kheswa (42), who is from KwaMbotho village outside Harding, was born with a problem with his right leg and uses special footwear for disabled people to walk properly. Because of the long distance he had to travel to school, he dropped out and chased his dream of opening a business.
“I am growing chickens and selling to local businesses and local people. I don’t want to fold my arms and depend on the R1 600 disability grant,” said Kheswa.
He said many disabled people do not seek opportunities but instead focus on their disability and rely on the grant, which is not enough for them to survive.
“When the government made the Vuk’uzenzele call, I was happy because most people don’t want to use what God provided; they want to be spoon-fed. I don’t want my disability to stop me from opening a big poultry farm and creating job opportunities,” said Kheswa, who encouraged people to use what they have to succeed.
He thanked the Disabled People South Africa organisation for helping many disabled people with support.
